How do I get started? Where do I start? What should I be doing?
If you're anything like me, you may have asked yourself one of these questions. Once you have posed this question, you have made a clear distinction that exercise should be a part of your life, but you just don't know where to begin. This is a great place to be. Let's dig into what may be some great places to start the first step to a healthier lifestyle.
Knowing where to begin first starts with analyzing your goal. What are you striving for? losing body fat? Wider range of functional movement? Higher standard of health?
I want to give you tangible information that you can use, I'm going to show you some common goals and there corresponding ideal starting points for most people. This is not ground breaking nor is it a sure way for everyone, but it's a start and that's all we are looking for at this point.
- Lose Body Fat - Cardio is an obvious starting point and perfecting fine. I would argue that if you're looking for long term success this is not ideal. You want to start a resistance training routine with emphasis on strength. This will increase muscle mass (not bulkiness) and metabolism. Thus, you will see body fat percentage go down without forcing yourself to do large amounts of cardio.
- Build Muscle - If you're just getting started and don't have experience lifting weights. A basic resistance training routine would benefit you tremendously, as you progress, so should the routine.
- Increase Strength - Again, if you're just getting started and have limited experience with weights. A basic resistance training routine is good to start with. As you progress, introducing a great strength training program will be ideal.
You may notice that there is a theme throughout. Resistance training is beginning to be one of highest recommended forms of exercise, and for good reason. Most people will benefit the most from a great resistance training routine.
Always remember, you will have much greater success with all of these goals and many more with proper nutritional habits.
Enjoy the Process
The biggest factor, above all, in your success as a beginner is staying motivated. A great way to maintain this motivation is to pick things that you enjoy doing. The most effective routine is one that you will stick to. This could be scheduling activities outside your normal workout routine. Hiking, dancing, or anything you enjoy that gets you more active.
One of the easiest and most successful ways to start is to find a great personal trainer. You're looking for someone who's knowledgeable and can add value to your overall success.
Studies have shown that not only is working with a personal trainer more effective, but it also increases your likelihood to continue routine exercise and ultimately make it a part of your daily lifestyle.
